Pajama Day was a big hit with ALL of the kindergarten students. Thank you to all of the parents that sent in snacks! We have enough snacks left over to share for several days!!

December News

Dear Kindergarten Families,
      The kindergarten school year was flying by until we reached December...and then, the students started the daily count down until Christmas. They thought that we were never going to get to the 25th!    It was hard to tell if the anticipation waiting on Christmas was more exciting or Christmas itself. I guess we will have to wait until the holidays are over the find out.
      We settled into reading groups and it is a time that all of the children look forward to each day. It often feels more like a family meeting time around the table. The children have time to share personal news and have small group conversation. It is encouraging for me when the students do not want to leave the reading group. Nothing is better than seeing the children have fun while they are learning!
      We have spent much of our math learning time counting to 100, counting back from 10, counting objects to 20, reading numbers in random order and writing numbers. We have continued to sort and sort and sort! After we sort we make patterns. Don't forget to ask your children to identify their patterns: AB, AAB, ABC or AABB. I am looking forward to extending the students knowledge of shapes as we do more in the coming weeks with 2 dimensional and 3-dimensional figures.
     The Christmas Holiday parties were GREAT! THANK YOU to all of the parents that worked so hard to make our parties successful. The children loved having their parents come to school and join in the fun!

November News

Dear Families,

The month of November was jam packed with FUN learning!

We look forward to meeting in small groups each day and working on strategies that help the students become better readers. It is amazing how quickly they are moving through the Reading Street Units and learning the skills. Once again, the Reading Street website is: www.pearsonsuccessnet.com. You will be able to review the activities in the units each week and the reading strategies. During our small reading group time, we are learning strategies to help us with our reading. For example: take a picture walk, point under the words, look for the pattern and get your mouth ready (sound) if you don't know the word. Remember pictures are very important in the beginning stage of reading.

Thanksgiving was exciting in our classroom. We were able to take a "Virtual Tour" to Plimoth Plantation (this is the correct spelling for the settlers town). www.scholastic.com/scholastic_thanksgiving/voyage/tour.htm Can you tell how much I love the new technology and all of the new experiences your children are able to receive at AMELIA ELEMENTARY. The day before Thanksgiving we "became" Pilgrims and Indians. We made our own headdresses, Indian vests, our own cornbread cakes and we REALLY made our own butter.

The Kindergarten Teachers are asking each child to bring a book to school to exchange for their Christmas gift. I am sending a letter with specific information and giving you the opportunity to order the book from the Scholastic order forms and to go online to order your gift exchange book. I have extended the ordering date until December 8th.

I am asking anyone that is able to send in ONE of the following items: Gallon ziplock baggies, Disinfectant wipes, napkins or paper towels. We are using the baggies to send books home weekly and the other items for snack time. It would be wonderful if we could have disinfectant wipes to use everyday at lunch time, to clean our hand and our tables.

We spoke briefly about the DIBELS test in January and activities to help your children get ready for the test. This is a website that will give you another way to practice: Go to Bing and type in DIBELS Interventions Electrified! You should find a program full of great activities.

I could not close our November News without telling ALL of our families how THANKFUL I am to be working with your children. I look forward to coming to school every day and teaching. You and your children have made my job a happy one! THANK YOU!

Kindergarten Gets a Visit from Home Depot!!!

Kindergarten is certainly a BUSY place for learning. We have talked about 2 dimensional and 3 dimensional shapes since school started and we needed some hands-on experience making a 3 dimensional figure. What a great time we had when Charlie and Heather came to our classroom from Home Depot with "Heart Shaped Basket" kits. You should seen us putting on our aprons and hammering our own 3 dimensional figures together.
The children were happy to know that they can visit Home Depot on the first Saturday of every month and make other 3 dimensional figures, if their parents take them.
We want to say a big thank you to Home Depot, Charlie and Heather!!!!

Kindergarten Gets a Visit From the Fire Department!!!

On Tuesday afternoon, Kindergarten had a surprise visitor drop in to see us.

Fireman Gates is a full time fireman at the Pierce Township Fire Dept. His son, Connor,is in Miss VanEman's classroom.

Mr. Gates showed the Kindergarten students what he would be wearing if he had to come to their house for a fire. Then, he let the students come up and touch his uniform and mask so they would not be scared if they were ever in a fire.

All of the students want to say a big THANK YOU to Mr. Gates for giving such a wonderful presentation to our Kindergarten classes!!

September News

September came and went quickly. It took NO TIME for us to become a family of learners. We have enjoyed getting to know each other, school rules and especially the letters of the alphabet!! We have learned letter songs, as well as many other songs...don't forget to ask us to sing to you at home!
We started the new Reading Street reading program. Last week, I sent home an on-line sign up sheet that allows you to participate in activities that go along with what we are doing in class. I am assigning books for you to read with your child. Check it out and let me know how you like bringing the classroom activities into your home.
We have learned to match, sort, compare, order, count, pattern, measure and subtize during our Everyday Math activity time each day.
Scholastic book orders were also sent home last week. Do NOT send money to school. If you want to order a book, you must do so on-line with a credit card. Book orders are due October 21st. The book order information is attached to the sheet.
Lunch money: If you child is going to be a buyer it is important that you put the money in a sealed envelope with your child's first name,last name and his/her ID number. If you lost the ID number, please let me know and I will give it to you again.
Just a reminder that your child will need to bring a snack everyday. Please make sure the snacks are in a seperate bag from their lunchboxes. Some children are bringing in 2 or 3 different snacks and eating them all. They should only have one snack a day. If your child is lunch buyer or free/reduced lunch and is NOT packing, please do not send their snack in a lunch box. Also,please do not send yogurt, applesauce or any liquid snacks. We have had several spills! Dry cereal, crackers, apples, banana and pretzels are simple to eat and clean up.

Homework started the first week of October. If your child is in Group A he/she received the homework packet on the first Wednesday of the month. If your child is in Group B he/she received the homework packet on the first Thursday of each month. Homework is to be done on days they are not in school. Homework is NOT turned in until the last week of the month.

Every Wednesday,Group A students and Thursday, Group B students will receive a folder. It contains important office papers that they ask me to send home to you. Please look for these folders to come home, empty them and send them back to school the next school day your child attends. Please help them return the folders to school!

The weather is starting to turn cooler, so it is important that you check the weather before you send your child to school. We try to go outside for both recesses, so they will need to bring a jacket on cool days.

I have several unclaimed jackets, sweaters, sweatshirts and lunch boxes without names. The students will NOT claim them. If they are not claimed after the first quarter, I will send them to the lost and found.

It is very important for your child to have their bookbags EVERY DAY!! The bookbag has their dismissal tag on it and we MUST have the tag for dismissal.

School fees are $50.00 and payable to Amelia Elementary.

I like to add pictures to my blog throughout the year and I can only include your child's picture if I have your signed paper returned to me. Thank you for your help and support.

Welcome to our New Classroom!

Dear Parents,

We wanted to give you a sneak peak of our beautiful classroom! You will have to stop by and watch us learn in our NEW environment!

We have a sink, drinking fountain and a restroom in our classroom!

The front of the classroom has a new "Smart Board". We are sure you have heard plenty about us using it in class.

These are our cubbies. We each have a hook for our backpack and coat.

This is the table for our computer and listening centers. We are eager to use the computers and we will be experiencing using a laptop without a mouse...Kindergarten can be challenging...AND, FUN!!
